Maths and English update May 2019

Dear Parents
In English with Lizzie this week, the Beams have been learning the letter sounds c, k and ck, and practising writing the letters p and g. They read Cops and Robbers, made a wanted poster, and practised writing short sentences using CVC (3-letter) words.
To support your child at home:
* practise writing k, p and g
* practise writing and reading CVC words
* think up sentences to say, using some of these CVC words.
In English with Ali this week, the Sparks and Young Students have been learning/revising alphabetical order, making their own themed alphabets, and learning to use a dictionary.
In maths the children have been exploring addition (including simple addition word problems) and subtraction, either using a number line or the column method, with the Young Students working on adding and subtracting decimals.
To support your child at home:
* Explore dictionaries and other alphabetically ordered texts (thesaurus/encyclopaedia)
* write your own themed alphabet
* explore adding and subtracting: play shops; count money; play board games; ask your child to demonstrate the method(s) they prefer.

It would be of enormous benefit if your child could read every day, any type of text (stories, non-fiction, comics and magazines, e-books, for example). If your child is not yet reading, or is in the early stages of their reading journey, the libraries are a great resource, they stock lots of early reading books, often in sets, and there are also some good online reading schemes like Reading Eggs. A little practise every day is the most effective way to build reading skills.

Warm Regards
Ali and Lizzie
