Maths & English update 13th May

Dear Parents
This week with Lizzie in maths, the Beams practised the days of the week and the months of the year, and learned to add by counting on from the largest number.
In english they shared pirate stories, practised reading pirate captions, discovered rhyming words and thought of rhyming words with 'ip' endings (eg ship, tip, pip), and learned the 'e' sound. They also shared early reading books.
At home you can support this learning by:
* continuing daily reading practise
* practising the days of the week and the months of the year, including talking about events and/or routines for different days, and the features of each month (eg weather, celebrations, family birthdays)
* practise identifying words that rhyme with 'ip' and make your own list together (you could also extend this to different rhyming lists - this can be a lot of fun - and to identifying rhymes in rhyming stories, the Julia Donaldson books are great for this)

This week with Ali in maths, the Sparks and Young Students continued working on column subtraction (with decimals for the Young Students), and solved simple subtraction word problems.
In english the children continued to work on their own shared dictionary, and explored encyclopaedias, identifying and listing their features.
To support your child at home:
* continue the maths ideas suggested last week, plus exploring different subtraction methods together (using a number line, a 100 square, column methods, partitioning and/or using objects)
* compare different types of non-fiction texts and identify their features (eg information books, magazines, encyclopaedias, dictionary, thesaurus, recipe books, leaflets, instructions, newspapers)
* continue daily reading practise
Many Thanks
Lizzie and Ali
