Maths & English update 18th May
Dear Parents
This week in maths with Lizzie, the Beams have been recapping the days of the week and the months of the year, and counting in 5s. They have been learning to recognise and write numbers on the 100 square, and have explored practical methods for counting on and adding.
In english they have been continuing their pirate work, and made treasure coins using rhyming 'ip' words. They have been reading and writing 'tricky' words: I, no, go, to, the. They have been looking at the 'u' sound.
To support your child at home you could:
* practise the 'u' sound and use the letter in reading and writing 3-letter (CVC) words
* imagine if you were a pirate, what would you be like? Describe yourself using lots of interesting words.
* continue daily reading practise
In maths with Ali this week the Sparks and Young Students have been working on place value in 2 and 3- digit numbers (and negative numbers for the YS), identifying number patterns, and writing numbers as words.
To support your child at home you could:
* identify numbers and number words in the environment (at home, in your village/town/city, on the roads). You could record these in writing, pictures and/or photos.
* begin to look at larger numbers, and explore what each digit is worth (eg what is the 2 in 2,341), again, look for these numbers in the environment
* Young Students could explore imperial and metric measurements, using both to measure and weigh objects, liquids and solids (baking is great for this) and distances.
In english the children have been learning/revising word types: nouns (proper and common) and adjectives
To support them at home you could:
* explore nouns - you could label items around the house, or look for different kinds of nouns in books, magazines, newspapers and the environment (eg street names)
* explore adjectives, draw and describe some favourite toys/objects/pets, see how many describing words you can think of. Talk about why adjectives are useful, what do they do?
* continue daily reading practise
Warm Regards
Lizzie and Ali
